Ruth is the heroine of the book which bears her name. She was a Moabites who lived in the time of the Judges. Ruth married the elder son of Elimelech and Naomi in her own land when the family came with their two sons from Bethlehem-Judah to Moab during a famine.

Naomi was widowed and then her two sons died without heir, leaving her with two daughters-in-law. Naomi then was determined to return to her native country, where upon Ruth announced that she intended to accompany her, adopting both her nation and her God, only by death they be separated. (Ruth 1:17). They returned to Bethlehem during the barley harvest and Ruth went to glean in the field of Boaz.

Ruth was favored throughout the wheat and barley harvest, one thing led to another as she acted on Naomi’s instructions. Upon learning about Elimelech and Naomi kinsman. To this Boaz added the obligation of levirate marriage to Ruth after many Israelite ritual games was done by Ruth and Naomi. Boaz and Ruth is found in the lineage of Jesus, their son Obed, Jesse and David. (Matt. 1:5,6; Ruth 4:21,22) Tamar (Gen 38) and Rahab (Jos. 2) are an extension to the book of Ruth by the Zayas Old Testament Studies. They are ancestor of David, who is included in our Lord’s genealogy. (Matt 1:3-6)
